The workshop aims to explore the following key questions:

  • What does Gender-Just & LGBTIQA+ affirmative and inclusive Japanese Studies and Japanese Language education mean for you?
  • How can you facilitate gender-just & LGBTIQA+ affirmative & Inclusive language in your Japanese Studies/Japanese Language Education and /or local circumstances?
  • How can we collaborate together on LGBTIQA+ inclusive and affirmative language in our Japanese Studies/Japanese Language Education teaching and learning practices?

This is a project led by International Network of Gender, Sexuality & Japanese Language Education (INGS-Japanese) and funded by Japanese Studies Association of Australia

Gender-Inclusive Language Instruction Conference 2023

Languages are dynamic and ever-evolving; they shape one’s identity and reflect the societal attitudes and norms. This conference brings together researchers, practitioners and members of the LGBTQI+ communities who will discuss the urgency of adopting gender-inclusive language in the effort of raising awareness of gendered linguistic bias and promoting diverse and inclusive learning environments. Speakers will discuss their research and projects, as well as the challenges and cultural implications of using non-binary language. Attendees will be provided with practical ways of using gender alternatives in their classrooms in order to promote and celebrate diversity, equity and inclusion.

　ここ10年ほど、「生（ライフ）」をキーワードに社会的課題とリンクした日本語授業の実践を続けています。生と死、命、性、戦争、あるいは3.11を中心とした災害全般、そして差別など、日本語教育ではタブー視されがちなテーマに基づく連続授業をまったくの手探りで試みる中で、受講生から前向きで嬉しい反応を得てきました。

　そのような一般に避けられやすいテーマのうち、今回は特に「性」に焦点化した授業の具体的な内容の紹介を軸に据えます。それと並行して、実践までの経緯、狙いや意義、受講者の反応、また問題点などをご報告し、参加者の皆さんと性にまつわる授業のあり方や課題を議論できたらと思います。

　あくまでも日本語学校での実践例の紹介ですが、ジェンダーやLGBTQ、SOGIESCを学ぶ重要性を踏まえながらも、それに限らない、性にまつわる多様なトピックを扱うことがもたらす質的な豊かさや可能性、希望を見出していただければ幸いです。これらは日本語教育の世界では蓄積に乏しく、過去の実践も単発的で教科書類もマニュアルもないに等しいものですが、それゆえのやりがいもあります。さらには第二言語としての日本語教育だからこその成果、意義もうかがえる…そんな実感と手応えを手にしています。それらから、この会が学習者の幸せ、QOLの向上につながる日本語教育とは何か、日本語教育とはそもそも何なのか…などをあらためて考えてみる機会になったら嬉しいです。

The International Network of Gender, Sexuality & Japanese Language Education (INGS-J) is founded in 2021 by Claire Maree (The University of Melbourne) and Jotaro Arimori (The University of Toronto) aiming to build greater inclusivity for gender and sexual diversity in Japanese language education and learning spaces. INGS-J will foster collaborative intersectionality and queer approaches to language pedagogy and classroom practices. INGS-J will collaborate widely, and internationally to share information and strategies for creating greater inclusivity in Japanese language education for all learners, educators and Japanese language users.

Gender and Education Association Event: The Politics of Gender and Education Research

This free event will bring together researchers from across Australia who will discuss,
debate and demonstrate the politics of gender and education research in Australia and beyond.


Keynote Speaker: Dr. Roz Ward, Deakin University
Trouble and Strife: Conservative backlash, Safe Schools, and the Importance of the Family
Drawing on historical materialist methods and my autotheoretical doctoral research, I
present a re-imaging of Marxist understandings of gender and sexuality research and
practice within education. How do the productive and reproductive functions of capitalism materially benefit from gender-based oppression and the heteronormative family? How are these benefits provided and supported within the education system? With this evidence, I make the case that capitalism in crisis requires the politics of backlash as a means of increasing ideological pressure on the acceptance of normative ideas about gender and sexuality and the punishment of resistance.
